Working at home on your computer certainly does have it’s challenges. The good news is that these challenges can be overcome.
Sometimes the people around us do not realize that when you work from home you actually do need to sit there and produce something or you don’t get paid. Interruptions happen when neighbors and friends want to drop in for a visit or ring you for a chat during your work hours.
When you are at home it is easy to find yourself being distracted by things that need to be done around the house. Your intention of a quick tidy up of the kitchen or putting on a load of washing can easily turn into something not so quick. There is a greater chance of you finding some other task to do. This can turn into a distraction and you not putting in the hours that you need for your work.
Working at a computer for long periods often comes with spending many hours sitting in your chair and a lack of exercise. This can lead to obesity and other health problems. It is important to break up the time you spend at your desk regularly to take a few minutes to get up and move around. You should also try to include some regular exercise into your week.
When you are not in the workplace you have the freedom to do what you want. This is great but it can also be a problem if you are easily distracted by other things which interfere with your ability to focus on the job you are doing. Examples include things like social media and YouTube. Sometimes you need to visit these sites as part of your work but you get distracted and spend too much time on there.
When you work for yourself sometimes it can take quite a while to see results and even an income. This can be difficult especially when you start to feel like you are getting nowhere. Having nobody around to consult with and lift your spirits can cause you to feel down and wonder whether you are just wasting your time. Setting daily tasks and goals for yourself will help you see the big picture and keep you motivated to keep going.
Working on your own all day with nobody else around can make you feel isolated. There is no one to have a coffee break with or bounce ideas off. Some people may be ok with this and enjoy the solitude and are more productive but for others it may not be ideal. It is important to network with other people who also work from home so that you can support each other.
